Now this is a topic I’ve been dying to talk about on here because I’ve noticed things getting out of control, especially on Social Media and I have thoughts. First and foremost I’ve been a corporate girlie for quite some time now and I’ve been very honest about it. My first serious corporate job was for a large American corporation as a Customer Experience agent which simply means a Call Center job. I even wrote about my entire experience and for reference you can read the article here if you’re curious to find out more.

Getting back to the main point of this article, when I tell you I absolutely hated, despised and loathed that job I am so serious it’s not even funny. People who worked with me or have worked in a Call Center before will understand. I had all the reasons in the entire world not to do my best at that job because looking back I has working and busting my a** for change money. The amount of work I was putting in was astronomical and of course I was amongst the very few that did their job and them some while others were scheming and finding ways to avoid work. That’s where I draw the line… that’s where you’ve got me confused with someone else. Cause that stuff is not acceptable to me. It’s simply not. And nowadays a lot of people especially the Gen Zers find avoiding work and not doing what there are paid to do very funny and entertaining and some of them make it a personality trait as well. Something about that just does not sit well with my spirit.

When you know you’re doing your job very well and people around you say things like „They are not giving me the salary I want and deserve so I’m just going to do a mediocre job” „They should have raised the salary even more. Now I’m frustrated and don’t care anymore” it just sounds like those people don’t have the slightest clue what responsibility and accountability means as an adult. The only thing those people are after is sticking to the man simply because they are mad, frustrated or simply don’t feel like working. I truly think Gen Zers suffer from Kim K. complex and what that means is: they expect companies to pay them what they feel it’s their God given right just because they are logged in at work and gracing everybody with their presence.

And that’s the most delusional thing I’ve ever heard and I’m terribly sorry to be the one to say it, but this attitude will and should get you fired. I completely understand and agree with the concept „I was not born on this Earth to only pay bills” and that we have to experience joy and happiness whatever that means for each of us. But if you don’t have generational wealth, you did not marry rich and you have to make it on your own (like myself and most of the people here on this planet) working is a must for survival and performing your job well is also a must and actually stated in your contract.

I’m not ashamed to admit it, I spend quite some time on Social Media, especially on TikTok and somehow I ended up for a while on the side of TikTok where creators make fun of corporate jobs, working from home and doing everything else but work and then getting mad when they receive an email asking about the job they were supposed to do. Just a quick PSA here before I forget: from 2020 a lot of us started working from home, correct? And even after the pandemic ended, a lot of companies decided to let people work from home because it was convenient for everyone. Can you guess what happened next? Many people took advantage of that opportunity, but not in the best way, no.

They saw that as a sign not be present at their laptop for hours, not respond to calls or messages via teams/chat and not perform the tasks they were supposed to be doing on time. We all know why that happened: because they worked from home and they were busy doing home activities, not actual work. And it’s no surprise what action the companies took when they realized what was happening: they made people come back to the office. I cannot even begin to tell you how many friends of mine working in a corporate environment had to go back to the office everyday because of some bad apples that did not know how to appreciate the luxury of working from home.

Let’s get a few things straight here cause I can already hear all of you calling me a corporate sell out and a pick-me. I would suggest you refrain until you get the full story. It’s completely true that I actually find those videos funny, witty, creative, relatable… to a degree but they are meant to only be entertaining, not meant for people to follow that type of rhetoric and behavior in real life. I hope whoever is reading this can understand, there’s a complete difference between how corporate life is portrayed online VS how it actually is in real life and how you should conduct yourself. I’m writing this article because more and more I see people actually thinking it’s ok to dump their work on someone else, not caring if they meet the deadline for a report or project, getting late at work, making up stories why you cannot come to work and the list goes on and not to mention womanizing incompetence when it suits them.

In the words of the amazing Taylor Swift: „Look what you made me do!” taking the side of the multi dollar corporations I have no business defending or standing up for, but here we are. Yes, here we are because a lot of people have lost their work integrity and respect for their colleagues. That’s the reason I’m irritated. When I see someone purposely slacking at work, not doing what they are supposed to do, well I’m gonna say something about it especially if it impacts all the team. It’s not fair to me and to everyone else who’s doing their part. Here’s the thing: I’m not saying you should go above and beyond. No, not by a long shot more so if you’re not paid enough to do that. I’m just saying get done in time the tasks you are supposed to have done. Nothing more, nothing less.

I’m gonna say this for everyone who has ears to listen: just because you don’t have your dream job this doesn’t mean you have an excuse to make people around you miserable because you don’t want to do the job you’re hired to do. I’m repeating myself, but one more time: perform the tasks as stipulated in your contract, you don’t have go above and beyond. If any company asks you to do that, but they’re not giving you enough compensation, well quit and find a new job. Would it be difficult? Yes. Is it necessary? Also, yes. And that’s another topic for another article.
