I got lucky this past weekend finding good movies to watch and I love that for me. It’s been a long time coming to be honest with you guys because there are really not a lot of great movies out there anymore. I hate to be this dramatic, but it’s true. I wrote about „Voicemails for Isabelle”, if you guys did not get to read my take on that movie, go check it out as well. I promise you it’s gonna be worth it.
Let’s get back to the main topic, the new movie on Netflix, People we meet on Vacation. I gotta admit, this was a random pick for me, I did not see this movie in the upcoming arrivals beforehand. Which is really weird, because if you know me, you know I like to take advantage of that reminder button and check out what new series and movies will come up.
From the get go, the movie is interesting and I’m not gonna lie. Poppy, the female main character kind of pissed me of a little bit. I know you’re not supposed to say this and usually I don’t agree with people when they say „You’re too much” or „You’re doing too much”, but in this case, she was annoying and to be honest not in a cute, romantic, adorable way. No. She was too much overall. Too much of everything and again, not in a good way. She gave me the ick immediately. And what pissed me off even more is that she had an attitude towards Alex, the male lead in this movie because he was not reciprocating her energy and he was not in the mood to talk, to be a chatty Cathy. And guess why?
Because Poppy pissed him off and messed almost everything up from the beginning. Excuse him if he’s not in the mood to be all smiles on the road. She was not reading the room at all and I am surprised Alex even liked her to begin with. My honest opinion on them right off the bat…they are not a good pair. I know people say opposite attract, but you know what? You’re wrong. And if you see the movie, hopefully you will understand why.
You know when people say don’t get involved with a man who has a girl best friend because it’s a red flag? Well Poppy is the reason why they are absolutely right, 110%, okay? Don’t let anyone else fool you or try to manipulate you in thinking that a man and a woman being best friends, but not being a couple is a normal thing. It’s not.
Being an acquaintance is perfectly acceptable, a friend you talk to once a month or so, of course. But no a best friend you go on trips with. I know it’s a movie, and it’s fiction, but you know what? You’d be surprised to know how many people actually had similar situations happened to them, like in this movie. I said similar, not exact story, there’s a difference.
The relationship between these two is very complicated and I would never „ship them” as the youngsters would say. Poppy is chaotic, a free spirit, does not like to stand still and most of all, and what to me is the most annoying is that she doesn’t know what she wants. She’s too go with the flow and that will clash with Alex’s personality. He’s a lot more stable, rational and I could tell he fell for her first because he was willing to try new things when he was around Poppy on their trips. And I’m not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but in my opinion they are too different and they simply don’t match. Let’s stop romanticizing opposite attract kind of relationships because most of them are toxic. As you will see in the movie, they had lots of fights exactly because they are too different and from the start they should not have been a thing. It’s simply too much work and trust me it’s not worth it in real life. Again, this is a movie, and it’s scripted, ok? Don’t think that if you have this type of dynamic in your relationship you will end up happy or have a wonderful relationship. You won’t.
You might think, „But what on God’s green Earth possessed you to write about this movie if you hate it so much?”. You would think that, but no. I actually liked the movie a lot. And what I truly loved is that this movie gave me the opportunity to speak about a topic I’ve been dying to speak about. This weird, toxic type of relationship that we put on a pedestal. „Oh, you’re my Yin to my Yang” It’s not romantic or endearing, it’s simply exhausting mentally and when two people are too different they do not belong in a romantic relationship. I know this is a controversial take, believe you me, because most of you will say „But that’s the best kind of relationship because we balance each other so well and it’s a perfect match”. You’re lying, you’re lying and lying even more. One of you is always the one who sacrifices a lot for the relationship to work and the other one is oblivious about it or is ok with it. Until they will not be.
Ok, coming back to the movie, I’m not saying the chemistry is not good between the characters, because it truly is, but from my perspective …that small window they had to make things happen and become a couple was long gone. As much as I love this movie, they pointed out something that’s triggering to me, especially in romantic relationships: wasting time. You can never get back the time you’ve wasted, never. We all agree, right? So to me, that’s that …I would be frustrated and especially annoyed if „my soul mate” wasted God knows how much time to realize that I’m the one for him.
Why would I care if you realize something you should have known when you’ve met me? I think Poppy and Alex took too long to be on the same page and that speaks loudly about the issues we have with romantic relationships nowadays. People should move on faster and detach when the other person is not on the same page with them. We don’t need to beg them to see us and most of all, if/when they come back with their big realization just let them be because time has passed and there’s no looking back.
I’m not sure if I agree with the ending, but it did match what I expected it to be somehow. Again, I’m writing this article because this is a great movie, it’s entertaining. All these thoughts I’ve had they came to my head after I’ve seen the movie. I did very much enjoy it and that’s why I’m writing about it. It’s like that thing…when you watch for instance Gossip Girl again in your 30s and it hits so different because now you see it with completely different eyes and have a total new perspective on everything that happens in the show. That’s what this movie did to me.
Please go watch and feel free to use the comment section to let me know what you think.
