Let me start my saying that I don’t ever watch horror movies. I’ve never understood and will never understand the appeal of horror movies. It’s just not my vibe, not my aesthetic at all, so I stay clear of them. I am chronically online, especially on TikTok, so of course I saw a few scenes from the movie Obsession. It was advertised as a horror movie, but from the scenes, the plot of the movie itself and the trailer it did not stand out to me as a horror movie. From my perspective it was more of a thriller mixed very well with spiritual beliefs and laws of the Universe.
I’m not gonna deny, I saw the horror elements from the trailer of the movie, but they were not standing out, they were more like a „background character”. What truly made me buy a ticket and go see the movie was the plot: a random guy likes a girl from his group of friends and he does not know how to speak with her about his feelings (shocking, right?) and the best idea he has is to buy a one wish willow from a witchy store and make a wish, and not just any wish…no, no. The wish was for Nikki, the friend he has a crush on, to love him more than anything in the world. This idea truly captivated me and I could not wait to go and see the movie, cause simply to me this was such an original idea that I had to see how it plays out.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am a spiritual person, I do believe in witchy practices and especially I believe in manifestation. The most important rule is: be very aware of what you speak, because your words are spells and they will manifest in your reality. Most people don’t want to realize that or they are too school for cool to be bothered with this type of information. And it’s their choice, of course, but I love that this movie, Obsession just showed everyone who was not a believer let’s say …that the spiritual side of things does exist and it demands more respect and consideration than you would think. I mean, I do genuinely hope that people understood the lesson after they saw the movie, and that is: don’t ever mess with anyone’s free will.
But let’s go deeper and talk about the movie, cause I’ve been waiting for this and now I have time. From the get go, the male character, Bear, pissed me off because you simply cannot say you love this girl so much and you like her and blablabla, but you are not capable of saying something about it. You simply did not like her enough then and that’s that. But ok. He’s being silly (this is me being nice now) he’s planning this entire thing, to buy her something as a gift, to take her home after her shift and finally ask her out and express his feelings to her. Does he do it? No, cause again, no brains or guts.
He did not find the gift he was looking for, but he did find a one wish willow. What’s that you ask? I did not know either, so it’s a piece of branch that you break and in that same moment, you make a wish and it will come true. What pissed me off even more is that, Nikki, being the nice girl that she is, before getting in the house she said to Bear point blank: if there’s something you want to ask me, now it’s the time.
My guy did nothing, just froze and after that got a tantrum because he’s such a loser that he missed his chance. And then he realized he can make a wish …and he does, like I said earlier. What he did not expect is for that wish for work…in the way that it did. And to be honest I was expecting it to work a bit later in the movie, or at least the next day …but no. It worked instantly. Nikki went in the house after Bear froze, he made the wish …and she came back! I was shocked. It’s like their discussion just a minute earlier never happened and Bear, rightfully so, freaked out. He kept asking Nikki if she was ok. And she kept saying yes and she invented a story about her father being sick and that’s why she may seem out of character.
Here’s the thing: the creepy, weird and scary stuff does happen pretty early on in the movie, what I mean is Bear even notices all the sudden changes in Nikki’s behavior and he still chooses not to acknowledge it. He brushed it off so fast and non-challantly like it’s nothing. I’m telling you now…it was something. Any human with a brain cell could see that. And my first thought was: this is what a man can endure just to get sex. And let me be very blunt: the one sex scene from this move was cringe and awful at best and so not sexy and again, this is me being nice. So after seeing that I’m wondering: if the sex if not crazy and out of this world, why would you accept Nikki’s behavior? What’s the point? I don’t believe for a second that Bear actually loved or even liked Nikki, there’s no evidence of that…not from my side. He did like the idea of her maybe, but not her, let’s not get it twisted.
Bear is the blueprint of men’s stupidity when it comes to women. In his group of friends he had Sarah, right? From the very first minutes if the movie I’ve noticed Sarah liked Bear a lot. Remember the hug she gave him? That’s when I knew. It was clear as day. And the thing is, I do believe he liked Sarah too, but he was too stupid to understand his feelings. He was too busy looking for his balls (he never found them btw) to ask Nikki out. Bear was so oblivious of what was going on around him that he never figured out that his best friend was seeing Nikki and sleeping with her for months and that’s the reason his friend never encouraged him to ask Nikki out and actually was trying to stop him.
Bear comes to the conclusion that the wish he made was a very bad idea and he calls the number on the package to try and undo the wish. Yeah, like that’s possible. He was talking for the guy on the phone and of course he’s confirming that he cannot undo the wish, but there is one way the wish can be undone and that is for him to die. He dies, the wish dies with him, fair enough right? After that the guy on the phone asked Bear if he wants to speak with Nikki …and what he hears on the phone scared the living shit out of me because it was Nikki’s soul screaming and yelling because she was trapped.
I got chills down my spine and I’ve got a mixed feelings of rage, sadness and being scared. Worst kind of mixed feelings, I’m telling you. In that moment Bear I think he realized this will not end well for him. This might be a reach, but her me out. Remember the party his best friend had at his house and Bear brought Nikki with him? They were playing a game and Bear had to kiss the person on his left. And guess who was on his left? Sarah. Of course the kiss never happened because Nikki made a horrible scene, she started to harm herself and everyone was looking at Bear and saying: Dude get up do something. Because his girlfriend was having a manic episode. But did he do something? Of course not.
Many will say that’s because he was in shock. Ok, that can be part of it, but I don’t think so. Since he knew the only way the wish to vanish was for him to die, he saw Nikki hurting herself and he decided to let it happened, because he did not want to die. If she would off herself, that’s even better for him.
The lack of action to me said it all. And even after this incredible gut-wrenching episode, he still defended „his relationship” with Nikki. Just in case you were wondering if Bear had enough of the crazy already. Apparently not.
Here’s why from my perspective this was not a horror movie. Because even if Nikki’s body was possessed by another entity/being there were multiple moments when even with that situation I started laughing. It was funny and not only to me, even the people in the theatre laughed. But don’t get me wrong, there were scary situations.
Two that would not leave my brain are when Nikki, meaning her soul asked Bear to kill her. The entity was sleeping and she asked to be killed because she could not take it anymore. And of course the one scene from the car. So right after Nikki asked Bear to kill her he went to see Sarah and talk with her.
She was very insistent to see him and have a conversation. I’m not gonna lie to you guys, I knew something was gonna happen in this scene. I knew it. I had my eyes covered and just watching through my fingers when I felt it was safe to do so. And lo be behold, the most shocking, but expected scene happened. Nikki came out of nowhere and brutally killed Sarah. Bear was standing there, as usual…no surprises there. And after that Sarah’s body was unrecognizable.
The horror elements in this movie come from very sudden mood swings from Nikki, the way she’s acting and the way she’s able to shock everyone around. The behavior itself sometimes is laughable, but scary the very next second and it’s an emotional roller coaster that you’re not expecting.
Let’s talk about the ending. After what happened with Sarah, Bear runs to the witchy store to buy another one wish willow, but the guy at the front desk explains again that a wish once done, it’s done. He already made his wish, and he can only ask someone else to wish for his wish to be undone. First he goes to his best friend and that guy is a tool anyway and does not believe one word Bear says. He wished for a lot of money and…he got it. Bear got pissed off, he went home and tried to ask Nikki to make the wish for him, but when it did not work he went to the bathroom and in his desperation came to the conclusion that this will not end if he’s still alive.
He saw some pills, he took them and he was waiting for the end. I thought this is the end. But ..not quite. Right after that Nikki broke the one wish willow she had and made the same wish Bear did…so what happened was that he got up…he went back to her and for a second there I thought the end was going to be extremely freaky and weird. But no. For a split moment they seemed very in love and so on…but the next second Bear died, because of course he took the pills.
Almost forgot about that small detail. There was a lot of crying…but the wish/spell finally broke with Bear being gone and then more crying happened because Nikki came back and she just saw Bear dead in her arms.

I absolutely loved the ending because it was simply justice for what Bear did and what he caused. I genuinely would have been pissed off if Bear did not die because that was the right thing to happen to him. No offence. Karmic justice, device intervention, call it what you will.
But one thing I do need to say at the end: be careful what you wish for…because you just might get it. And Bear fucked around and find out.
